This week on Shut Up & Sit Down…

actual faces, victory spreadsheet, things fall apart

Ava: Hey there Monday! The whole team is fresh back from a week of actually seeing each other in person, and playing as many board games as we could squeeze into four entire suitcases. I actually met Tom’s face. We sat around a table and passed physical cards to each other, making drafting games bearable for the first time in over a year. I believe I narrowly won the weekend’s victory spreadsheet, despite a full day of my brain being completely unable to wrap it’s head around maths, rules, and the concept of time. Also I had the worst single turn I’ve had in any game ever. It was fun.

This away week gave us a chance to playtest so many games that we’re all excessively hyped about how many games, opinions and gags we’ve got to stream, podcast and review right into your lovely faces.

So let’s get started!

Review – Summoner Wars 2nd Edition

smeg, sweet what's their name, we've recruited a new champion for you master, what?

When was the last time you had a good summon? It’s been too long, hasn’t it?

In that case, may we recommend the brand-spanking new edition of Summoner Wars, which is also now playable online? It’s got goblins. It’s got magic spells. It’s got plenty of charming fantasy art. And most importantly, it has a swanky, simple little ruleset that’s easy to learn and hard to master.

In fact, we like this game so much we’ve now reviewed it twice. I’m not going to go back and watch our original 2011 review because I would die instantly, but if you want to do so then that is a choice that you can make.

This week on Shut Up & Sit Down…

a thorough stoking, if su&sd was voltron who would be which bit, the sewer reviewer

Quinns: A wise fellow once said “Life is what happens when you’re making other plans.” Recently this has been especially true of the SU&SD weekly plan, which “life” has been chasing all over the shop with a big stick. Thwack! goes life. Ow! says team SU&SD. My new video review scheduled for last week will now be published this Wednesday. As Tom teased, you should expect plenty of cards, dice and violence, as well as a big ol’ SU&SD Recommends seal.

Podcast #142 – Oath: First Impressions

Paul Verehoeven’s ‘Showgirls’, ChancellorMaking, A Sceptre Scuffle, Basically Poker

In this frankly 142nd episode of the Shut Up & Sit Down podcast, Ava and Tom have been left alone again, and proceed to gush for almost an entire hour about the hottest hotgame right now: Oath! They shouldn’t let us get away with this stuff.

I can only promise that we do get to ‘how to play’ in this podcast, but it made sense for us to get whimsical about the victory conditions first to frame the rest of the rules, because they’re quite special.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

How to Play RATS: High Tea at Sea

A banquet on a sinking ship can’t last forever, but there’s just enough time to prove yourself the most fabulous rat aboard! Each round you’ll be scavenging for supplies and competing with your honorable host in a most delightful competition of dishes and decorations – all the while forgetting that the ship is sinking beneath you!

Download the game here, or visit this page for half of your purchase to go to environmental charity – let’s make our cardboard addiction a more sustainable hobby together!

RATS: High Tea at Sea is a print & play, roll & write boardgame for 2-6 players that’s playable over the internet, in the same room, or a combination of the two! It is preposterously easy to learn and teach, but has sneaky twists and turns that will reveal themselves every time you play – a lovely little treat for whoever fancies climbing aboard.

This week on Shut Up & Sit Down…

Does my selection box have a good insert, Tweatch Dot Com, Fear and Oathing

Tom: Welcome to the 15th Annual ‘This week on Shut Up & Sit Down’ weekly post! What joyous little treats have we got in our selection box this week? Just three meagre morsels? To be honest, I’d be disappointed too if my selection box only came with three chocolates/cheeses/’adventuremeats’, but what else can I tell you buddy; that’s just Brexit. Tuesday night? Myself and Matt ‘The Lees’ Lees will be going tea-to-tea in Chai: Toe for 2! Wait, no! It’s Chai Tea for Toe! Wait, no! Tea for 2! You can catch that on our Twitch channel, and you can be thankful for that untainted hyperlink after I decided that a portmanteau of Tea and Twitch into “Tweatch” didn’t deserve a regal blue glow. I’m an asset to the team, I promise. Wednesday? I can only promise that there will be a video review! Expect talk of cards, dice, and violence – all under one roof. Quinns will be delivering a barrage of white-hot content directly into your eyeballs… if you dare! Friday? Oh boy, it’s a big one. Ava and I are going to be chatting all things Oath in a podtastrophe of opinions and lingo. I’ve only gone and done 4 entire pages of notes for this one, so keen am I to get across my [opinions] on this [adjective] game! Hoooo boy, what an exciting week of good good content. What’s exciting in your week, everybody?

This week on Shut Up & Sit Down…

cosycore will never die but you will, full-but-small, titularly teensy

Ava: Ooh, look, this week’s this week is going to be as compact as I can manage, because I’m rewriting the intro after noticing that everything’s got some kind of ‘small’ in it. Squeeze yourself into your tightest pants and squash straight into this most minuscule message…. That’s because Tuesday night I’m going to be on our Twitch channel with Matt and Tom, playing Tiny Turbo Cars from Horrible Guild. This is a recently-kickstarted game from the publishers of King’s Dilemma and Railroad Ink. Tiny Turbo Cars has you fiddling with a sliding puzzle and using it to pre-program the moves of the titularly teensy conveyances as they race around the kitchen floor. It sounds neat! I’m excited to find out how neat. Wednesday is review day, and Matt is building a colourful edifice of a review for you, which I’m excited for, because I already own it, and it’s a surprisingly full-but-small box. I shall say no more. Then Friday we’ll be podding our hearts away. Me and Matt are ready to record what I’m tentatively titling the ‘cosycore’ podcast, with a look at some gentle games with nice things in. Gardens and cupboards. Ooooh, lovely (and a bit of a break after last week’s sprawling massivenesses). So that’s the pint-sized line-up for this week! Any of that float your cosy? What’s the smallest lovely thing you did this weekend? What’s your favourite cupboard?
